Abstract
This study examines the impact of family type on health behaviors of elderly people in Korea. A basic premise of this study is that social integration through marriage and parenting controls an individual¡¯s inclination to engage in behaviors which affect health. Both the sense of meaning and the obligations arising from marriage and parenting will inhibit negative health behaviors and promote positive health behaviors. This Study investigates the influences of marriage and parenting on eight index of health behavior; a vaccination of influenza, regular check up, the cancer test, Restriction on smoking, Restriction on alcohol, regular exercise, balanced diet, health utilization. Using the KNHANES ¥³-2 data, there were Logistic regressions on each behavior of elderly people. The results show that social ties arising from marriage have a positive impact on health behaviors of elderly people, especially, a vaccination of influenza, the cancer test, Restriction on smoking, health utilization etc. However, social ties arising from Parenting did not affect the behaviors of elderly people, because their children grow too enough to feel the obligations from parenting. In short, the influences of marriage is the most important factor among family factors in explaining health behaviors of elderly people.
